Is A Washing Machine Better Than A Combined Washer-Dryer? by James Broddy
When the time comes to go out and buy new laundry appliances you may be tempted to invest in a washer dryer combo. But there are many arguments stating that separate washing machines and tumble dryers are better for your laundry and your schedule than the convenient combo appliances. How do these appliances stack up against each other? And how do you know which is better for your home and family?
What Do Washing Machines Offer That Washer Dryer Combos Cannot?
One of the main arguments for using separate laundry appliances is the reliability. Washing machines and tumble dryers operate in different ways to produce different results. The first will wet and wash the clothing; the second will spin the moisture that remains after this process out of the clothing, leaving it dry and fresh. When you use one machine for both of those processes it makes sense that this particular machine will be subjected to a heavier workload, and therefore potentially need more maintenance and repairs. Separate machines mean splitting the workload and likely results in longer lasting appliances.
Tumble dryers also tend to be more efficient than the dry cycle on washer dryer combos, although washing machines and combo appliances offer similar levels of efficiency. Most often the cycles for both washing and drying are shorter using separate machines than when using a combo model.
Another consideration is the ability to use both appliances simultaneously. Imagine how much slower your laundry will go if you cannot wash one load while another is drying – which is the case when using combo models.
Are There Advantages To Using Washer Dryers?
Many people appreciate that washer dryers are less expensive to purchase than two separate appliances, although they do tend to have higher operating costs. If you have limited space in your home a washer dryer combo may be the best answer, offering you all of the laundry capability you need. You will need a significant amount of space for separate appliances, possibly even a utility room. But a combined machine can be installed in your kitchen, in a closet or even in a large bathroom.
Repairs to the combo model may be more frequent, due to it seeing heavier use. And when the washing cycle is not working you cannot use the drying cycle either (although there is little need to unless you’ve hand washed the laundry). Even if you do need to replace a combo model more often, these are now cheaper and more readily available through all of the major manufacturers.
Whether washing machines are a better choice than a washer dryer combo models is a matter of personal preference. It will depend on your lifestyle, the layout of your home and your budget. Both can be very reliable and will look after your laundry needs well.
